Korean home food Kongnamul Kukbap[Bean Sprouts Soup ]

     Korean home Food & Drink

Korean  Kongnamul Kukbap[Bean Sprouts Soup ]

Jeonju Kongnamulgukbap and Moju, for anytime of the day
The Jeonju-produced Kongnamul is known as the best in Korea because the Jeonju soil is ideal
          for growing Kongnamul.

The breed of beans for Jeonju Kongnamul is called the ‘mice eyes’ bean,
and its soft texture is an ideal food for relieving hangovers.

Historic records cite that Koreans long ago ate Kongnamul to relieve famines
in the Goryo and Chosun dynasties.

Detailed recipes for Kongnamul are seen in 1910, and tradition records that it first
               originated in Jeonju.
The traditional Jeonju Kongnamul gukbap is made by boiling rice and kongnamul
in a Tukbaeki (unglazed earthen pot)  with lots of seasonings. Instead of boiling,
though, the hot soup can be added instead to the bowl of rice,
which is Nambusijang-style gukbap. These two different types of gukbap are popular
with drinkers of alcohol  in Jeonju.

These gukbaps are low in cost, relieve hangovers and take the edge of hunger for families,
              working class people and friends.

Korean rice wine Makgeoli, a traditional that restores the culture and life of the past.

* The best place to meet up with your friends, the Jeonju Makgeoli streets*

You don’t need to worry about side dishes and no time is wasted in ordering.
Just holler ‘one kettle of Makgeoli!’, and everything is served at once.
With another order of Makgeoli, a new side dish is served, then again different side dishes with the next.
A true luxury for the eyes, the mouth and the tummy .

How best to enjoy Jeonju Makgeoli
1)Use public transportation, no need to worry about driving under the influence
2) Drink makgeli when you’re not too full to fully enjoy the drink  and its side dishes
3) As you empty your kettle,
new side dishes are served, so take the opportunity to enjoy all the different side dishes.
When the manager is generous, you will be served with an enormous amount of side dishes.
    All are welcome!

4) The side dishes are all different upon regions, Samcheon-dong, Seosin-dong or Gyeongwon-dong.
Be sure to try all the different side dishes in the different regions
5) You can mix makgeoli with other alcohols.
Varying ratios offer a whole variety of different flavors!

* Land of Co-existence and Harmony, where insiders and outsiders live together*
There should be no distinction of insiders or outsiders,  and any distinction vanishes when drinking
Makgeoli.  Jeonju has long been known for harmony, equality and the coexistence of variety.
Bimbap and Makgeli are the symbol of harmony.

Here, outsider means those who only eat the side dishes and don’t drink the Makgeoli,
while insiders mean people who only drink the alcohol without tasting the side dishes!
You might be sober even after numerous shots or drunk even after having none.

You can be drunk four different ways with Jeonju Makgeoli,
_ through flavor, side dishes, ambience and low price_

     1)Drunk on the ambience
     2) Drunk from the extraordinary taste
3)Drunk from the generous side dishes
4)Drunk from low cost and generosity

****************************************************

* Makgeoli represents the local life and culture of ordinary people *
Jeonju Makgeoli is cited as one of the three most-known Korean Makgeolis,
and they are as equally famous as the Jeonju Bibimbap,
table d’hote and Kongnamul gukbap of Jeonju.

Makgeoli will not make you too tipsy, yet can relieve hunger,
      boost energy and strengthen friendship.

It is said Makgeoli is very similar to Koreans,
as a soul food for them where they can drink with memories and nostalgia of the past.

- Well-being alcohol , Makgeoli -

Makgeli has a low alcohol content yet is actually nutritious, a food for well-being, it could be said.
First of all, it is high in protein and has 10 different essential amino acids.
A large amount of Vitamin B complex is coupled with large amount of lactobacillus and abundant fiber.
Makgeli is a naturally-fermented alcohol, making Koreans say that Makgeli is a food not an alcohol.

Stone pagoda of Bunhwangsa Temple in Kyengju city

This stone pagoda is the oldest of Silla’s remaining stone towers. It is an imitation brick pagoda that was made in the 3rd year of Queen Seondeok’s reign in the Silla era (634), by trimming Ansanam rocks into a brick shape so that they could be piled up.

Considered as big as a stylobate or a tower, this is estimated to have been originally a seven-story or nine-story stone pagoda.

In 1915, it was dismantled and repaired after the Japanese destroyed it.

It has double-hinged-door-type gamsils on the four sides of the body stone on the first story of the pagoda, where Buddhist statues are enshrined, on both sides of which Inwangsang (guard) statues, which keep the teachings of Buddha, are sculpted in relief.

The four s are mounted on the stylobate that is made of native rocks.

A stone sarira casket, which was discovered in the tower, contains various beads, scissors, gold and silver needles, a silver case, and coins (Sungryeongtongbo, Sangpyeongosu).

It can thus be presumed that this pagoda was dismantled and repaired during the reign of King Sookjong and King Yejong in the Goryo period.

Mireuksa- Temple, the biggest temple of Baekje kingdom[AD600-641]

Mireuksaaji, the biggest temple of Baekje

'Samgukyusa' records the first construction of Mireuksa Temple which had been the biggest temple of Baekje kingdom. Madong who became the king after marring to the daughter of Shilla kingdom, King Moo(The 30th King of Baekje ruled the country during A.D. 600~641) had been on his way to visit a famous monk Jimyeong Great Monk in Saja-sa temple with the Queen. Then suddenly three mireuk Budda's came out of a pond and this led to the founding of Mireuksa. King Jinpyeong of Shilla sent many engineers for the construction of Mireuksa Temple; Therefore, we can know that the Mireuksa Temple must have been built with all technologies from three Kingdoms.

Another Mireuksaji relics, Mireuksaji stone pagoda and Dangganjiju

Mireuksaji has two interesting relics for visitors. One thing is Mireuksaji Stone Pagoda and the other is Mireuksaji Dangganjiju. Mireuksaji stone pagoda is national treasure number. 11 and the oldest and the highest stone pagoda in Korea. It was supposed that the east pagoda of Mireuksaji was not wooden but stone by survey of Mahan & Baekje culture Institute, Wonkwang University from 1974 to 1975. So we can know the fact that Mireuksaji is east-west double pagoda. And east pagoda was supposed to a 9 floors by excavation. So it was restored to 9 floors(Height 27.67m) in 1993. The reason to regard this stone pagoda as the best stone pagoda is that the form of the pagoda fully reproduces the beautiful parts of wooden pagoda by using stone instead of wood . Dangganjiju is the pillar which is built on either side of danggan to support danggan, namely jiju. It seems that it was made before mid unified Silla.

The Mt. Mai looks like a horse's ear & mystery of Stone Pagoda Group

The 100 million year old mystery is pleasing to the senses. Mai Mountain! was easily overlooked with the simple story that the mountain looks like a horse's ear without acknowledging its mysterys, legends and histories of nature kept in it. Mai Mountain, the only double peaked mountain in the world, is at the center of Jinan Heights on the boundary of the Noryeong Mountains, approximately 32km to the east of Jeonju and 3km to the southeast of Jinan-Eup. The whole mountain consists of the sedimentary rocks. The female Mai peak of 673m and the male Mai peak of 667m form the backbone of the Geumgang and Seomjingang rivers.

Mai Mountain Stone Pagoda Group
If the culmination of mystery made by the nature is Ai Mountain, the summit of mystery made by the people will be Cheonjitap and stone pagodas made of natural stone. The pagoda group under the cliff south of the female Maibong Peak was built by arranging the stones by Paljindobeop drawing in accordance with the harmony of Yin and Yang. The pagodas show the culmination of harmony, sophisticated like an awl and elegant like a big mountain and stand row after row with the main pagoda, Cheonjitap Pagoda, as the summit. The Cheonjitap Pagoda is also a couple pagoda. The pagodas were built based on the Yin and Yang philosophy. The construction of Yin and Yang pagodas on the Yin and Yang Mountain includes a mystery that can't be called an accident.

The water drawn from the well and daybreak forms inversed ice pillar.
this kind of mystery until now not yet be solved.

This hiking path is maintained so that seniors and children can easily use this path. This path is the best one to appreciate the mysterious scenery of Mai Mountain in the congenial environment. A number of people take this path.

The scenery in which the rocks and the forest are harmonized reminds us of a Korean painting. The mysterious scenery is different every season.

In particular, the mysterious scenery of Mai Mountain along with the glorious tints of autumn foliage is beautiful and stands comparison with any place.

Furthermore, when you are on Biryongdae (observatory) on the hiking path, the open view makes even your heart cool. The breeze cools you even during the hot summer.

Long-Distance Hiking

Maryeong (Wongangjeong) -> Boheungsa Temple -> Gwangdaebong Peak -> Gogeumdang -> South Parking Lot: 5.0km (3 to 3 1/2hours required) -Closed during the forest fire prevention campaign period

# The time required for an adult hiker is 1.5 to 2.0 km per hour.

This path is mainly for the expert hikers. It's too long for the general visitors.

However, when you go up Gwangdaebong Peak, you will have a bird's eye view of the southern region of Jinan. When you look at the Mai Mountain while hiking from Gwangdaebong Peak to Gogeumdang, the scene changes depending on where you stand. The mysterious scene is comparable to that of Seorak Mountain.

In autumn, the autumn foliage, rocks and Mai Mountain in harmony evoke exclamations from those who look at them. It's relatively easy to climb with the exception of Gwangdaebong Peak which requires a climbing rope. The elderly and small children should avoid this path. The Boheungsa Temple course is a good choice for general climbers. Since several paths are closed during the Spring and Fall Forest Fire Prevention Campaign period, you need to check if the path is open in advance
