Golgul- sa Temple of Korean Zen Buddhist temple in kyengju

‘There is a Dunhuang Mago Grottoes in Korea’.

‘Golgul (meaning a skeleton cave)-sa Temple or Golgul Rock’ was named as the feature of the cave hollowed in the rock mountain is like a skeleton.

Their feature having stiff cliff, huge rocks and over ten caves hollowed in the rocks (they are not natural caves but dug by human), and serving Buddhist statues here and there make us remind of ‘Dunhuang’.

The quality of the rocks is limestone, so that they have been seriously damaged along the times.

On top of them, there is Rock-carving of Seated Buddha showing apparent expression on the face and tranquil smile, although a part of it has disappeared by rain and wind for long time.

It is heard that Golgul-sa Temple was established by a Buddhist monk, Gwangyu, from India and a great Buddhist monk Wonhyo stayed here.

It was also popular as a place where Hwalang (military arts of Silla Dynasty) trained.

It became popular again with its Temple Stay program where people can experience the combination of Zen- Buddhist meditation and traditional martial arts

Golgul Temple is open year-round to individuals and groups who wish to experience life at a Korean Zen Buddhist temple. Located about 20 kilometers outside of Gyeongju, the ancient capital of Korea, it is surrounded by the beauty of undisturbed nature. The Templestay program provides participants with a magnificent chance to relax, reflect and revitalize themselves in a tranquil environment.

Major activities in the Templestay program include: attending Buddhist ceremonial chanting services; Seon (Zen) meditation; a daily tea ceremony; Paragongyang, a Buddhist meal with traditional bowls (on Sundays); community work around the temple grounds; 108 bows, a chance to reflect on your true nature; and training in Seon (Zen) yoga and Sunmudo, which is Zen Martial Arts.

You’ll come back home richer at heart, more fully alive, more fully awake, more fully at peace. Check out our flippagebook for more detailed information.
