Busan Cinema center ushers in new era

The quiet revolution that is changing the map of the local film industry has begun, marked by the opening of the Busan Cinema Center in September. The new center has drawn the attention of filmmakers and other movie industry figures from around the world. The architectural landmark, which was designed to represent the theme of communication between the sky and ground, features the world’s largest cantilevered roof. The roof is 1.5 times the size of a soccer field and houses 120,000 light-emitting-diodes. However, it is not just the building and its exterior that are captivating people in the film industry, but rather the expectations these have generated in terms of Busan City’s status and what role the city will play in the future as a movie hub. The striking impact of the center has already been felt in conjunction with the successful hosting of the 16th Busan International Film Festival in October. With the branding power of the festival, as well as the increased networking and marketing opportunities this has created, the local film industry has been revitalized and Haeundae District Centum City – where the cinema is located – will be transformed into a film industry and cultural cluster. Last month also saw the opening of the Busan Culture Contents Complex. In 2013, the Korean Film Council, Korea Media Rating Board and Game Rating Board will move into the area, meaning that all of the nation’s key film-related institutes and infrastructure will be gathered in one spot near the Busan Cinema Center. This will lead to the formation of a new cluster of film-related culture, industry and tourism. With the opening of Busan Cinema Center, the city aims to be recognized as a UNESCO creative city of film after years of hard work. Busan City is also working at breakneck speed toward becoming a film industrial city. In the near future, it aims to add more brand value to stand among the upper ranks of global media cities. By Kim young-joo The launch of Busan Cinema Center represents a new era for the city and its film industry. The photo shows the opening ceremony of the 16th BIFF at Busan Cinema Center in 2011.
