The 17th Busan International Film Festival announces its Special Program in Focus, Poland in Close-up: The Great Polish Masters. Poland in Close-up: The Great Polish Masters will explore the past and the present of the Polish cinema that is rich with more than 100 years of history. Important films of ten master Polish filmmakers who have established their importance in broader European cinema history will be screened in Busan.

Poland in Close-up: The Great Polish Masters was made possible through cooperation with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, Polish Film Institute, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Korea, and the Polish National Film Archive.

Poland in Transition and its Great Filmmakers
The 20th Century is viewed as a period of war, revolution, and transition. It also coincides with the period when film emerged as a new art form. Film flourished among the youth living in Poland after the turmoil of World War II. The Polish school of filmmaking included Andrzej Wajda, Andrzej Munk, Jerzy Kawalerowicz, and Wojciech Jerzy Has who portrayed the downfall of Poland through social satires.

The next generation of filmmakers left for Western Europe, away from the oppression of Russia and the censorship of the Polish government, to seek freedom of expression. Roman Pola?ski, Jerzy Skolimowski, Agnieszka Holland and other Polish directors from this period continued the Polish cinema legacy abroad. The significance and brilliance of their films were recognized by the international film realm. Compared to the previous generation, their films dealt with more mainstream subject matters.
Meanwhile, Krzysztof Zanussi, Krzysztof Kie?lowski, Dorota K?dzierzawska remained in Poland to explore political, historical, and moralistic subject matters in their films.
